Best Red Wines for Summer with Michael Franz

2 hours, $85

As temperatures rise, it becomes trickier to select red wines that will suit the season. A robust Bordeaux that would have tasted great with cassoulet in February can be an oaky, tannic disaster in July. But the reverse is also true: A Chinon that might have been disappointingly light in winter can be perfect on a warm summer evening, and the best choice of all might actually be made from a grape you’ve barely heard of, such as Zweigelt or Blaüfrankisch. This class will survey the world’s best reds for summer sipping and dining, including many delicious, chill-able surprises.

Riesling Rules with Michael Franz

2 hours, $85

Dry or sweet, young or old, lean or rich…Riesling can do it all, and at the very highest level, which is why many experts regard it as the world’s greatest white grape variety. This class surveys Riesling’s broad range of styles and the many places where it excels, including Germany, Alsace, Austria, New York’s Finger Lakes, Washington state, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia. The lineup will vary by style as well as place of origin, and we’ll discuss Riesling’s remarkable (if under-appreciated) strengths as a food wine in relation to all of these styles.

Bastille Day Tour de France with Michael Franz

2 hours, $85

France remains the world’s greatest wine producing country, for two divergent reasons. On one hand, it has forged strong traditions that limit planting to very particular grape varieties and strictly regulate wine production in some regions, such as Burgundy. But in other regions like the Languedoc, experimentation gives rise to exciting new wines in every vintage, and even some seemingly stuffy appellations like Bordeaux are actually surprisingly dynamic. This class will both celebrate and investigate France’s pre-eminence by surveying a dozen wines—split evenly between legendary classics and striking innovations.
