Wines of the Rhône Valley with Steven Spurrier, International Wine Expert & Journalist

2 hours, $125

During his career, Steven Spurrier has excelled as a wine critic, journalist, buyer, entrepreneur, guide, vintner, visionary, mentor, restaurateur, author, educator, judge, communicator, and consultant. After attending the Rugby School and then university at the London School of Economics, Spurrier joined Christopher’s in St James’s in 1964. At that time, Christopher's was the poshest of London carriage-trade merchants. Soon after that, he did the Grand Tour of Europe’s vineyards. Spurrier worked a vintage in Burgundy and spent another six months in Bordeaux, the Rhône, Alsace, Champagne, Germany and Spain. It was in the 1970s that he first came to fame as a wine merchant in Paris, with his store Les Caves de la Madeleine. Later Spurrier would start the first consumer wine school of its kind, L’Académie du Vin. He currently is the President of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET), and he was just named 2017 Decanter Man of the Year.

Join Steven Spurrier as he leads a class and tasting on the wines of the Rhône Valley, France. We will taste 10 wines: Condrieu Guigal, Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Beaucastel, Crozes-Hermitage Blanc, Gigondas Ste Cosme, Chateauneuf Clos des Papes, Bandol Domaine Tempier, Cornas Clape Renaissance, Cote Rotie La Vialliere Champet, St Joseph Estate Chave, and Hermitage Delas.

Best Big Reds for Winter with Michael Franz

2 hours, $85

Winter may be dark and cold (especially this winter!), but it is not without its compensations, and perhaps the most consoling are rich stews, braised lamb shanks...and the big red wines that pair perfectly with them. This class will survey a dozen of the best options from around the world, including some famous choices such as Bordeaux, Barolo and Shiraz, but also lesser-known greats that are rising in prominence, such as Priorat from Spain, Tannat from Uruguay, and Aglianico from southern Italy. An important objective will be to show that wines with impressive weight and palate impact can also be nuanced and balanced.

Great Wines from Italy’s Northeast with Michael Franz

2 hours, $85

Venice is among the world’s most picturesque cities, and its powerful magnetism prevents many visitors from venturing far beyond its striking scenery. However, Venice also happens to be the hub of some of the best wine made on the planet. In this class, we’ll venture out from Venice to taste wonderful wines from Valpolicella, Amarone and Soave to the west, and also head north to taste amazing, high-end Prosecco as well as top whites and reds from Trentino, Alto Adige and Friuli.  And if you think the reds from the northeast are mere afterthoughts to Pinot Grigio, you are in for some very pleasant surprises….

Rise of the Kiwis and Revenge of the Aussies with Michael Franz

2 hours, $85

New Zealand has become justly famous for Sauvignon Blanc, but is now excelling with Pinot Noir, Riesling, Syrah. Pinot Gris and Chardonnay.  As for Australia, it had steadily built a reputation as the world’s most dynamic and innovative wine source.  But in a tragic twist of fate stretching back a decade, the mass market success of Yellow Tail saddled the entire industry with a reputation for being cheap, undermining worldwide demand for its boutique bottlings.  In addition to featuring rising stars from new Zealand, this class will highlight the enduring greatness of Australian wine—both white and red—with a selection of iconic examples.

Stars of Central Italy with Michael Franz

2 hours, $85

Tuscany is rightly famous for the great wines of Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino, but the swath of land stretching across the middle portion of the Italian “boot” produces many outstanding wines. In addition to several Tuscan standouts, we’ll also taste an array of the finest wines Umbria, Emilia-Romagna, The Marche and Abruzzo, learning about the key grape varieties as well as the growing conditions in the best sub-regions. A few whites and high-value wines will be included, but the emphasis will tilt toward reds of great complexity and distinction.
