Wines of Mediterranean France with Michael Franz

2 hours, $85

Few places in the world can rival the fame and romance associated with the French Riviera and the Mediterranean coast of France, but the wines from this swath of the country are still not as well known as they deserve to be. Yes, rosés from Provence and reds from Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the Côtes du Rhône are widely appreciated. However, Provence also makes marvelous reds and whites, and the southern Rhône is phenomenally complex, incorporating 95 distinct villages, 18 villages that can attach their names to Côtes du Rhône bottlings, and 16 separate crus such as Gigondas and Vacqueras. Moving westward, marvelous wines are made in many different styles in Languedoc and Roussillon. This class will consider growing conditions and historical backgrounds while surveying a broad set of benchmark wines from across southern coast.

Southern Italy with Michael Franz

2 hours, $85

Northern and central Italian wines remain more famous than their southern counterparts, but that has much more to do with the fact that the north of Italy is more prosperous and has more money for marketing and commercial development. In terms of sheer quality, the south produces highly distinctive and indisputably delicious reds, especially from Campania and Sicily, but also from Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria. And though it might seem that the white wines couldn’t be as good, cool microclimates in high altitude sites or proximate to cooling waters help the south make some of Italy’s very best whites from grapes such as Fiano, Greco, Falanghina, Catarratto, Inzolia and Grillo.  This eye-opening evening will include a dozen of southern Italy’s best wines.

World's Highest Average: Austria & New Zealand with Michael Franz

2 hours, $85

Although situated very far apart, Austria and New Zealand are twinned by the clear fact that they have achieved the highest average quality level in the entire world of wine. They are also related in style, as both emphasize purity above power, making some of the world’s freshest, most food-friendly wines. Austria and New Zealand are also similar in their wine industry profiles, with many new (or newly re-tooled) wineries boasting very high levels of technological sophistication. Based on weeks of tasting in the two nations in 2016, Michael Franz will show a full dozen of the strongest cases in point, including both whites and reds, and will show several rarities in addition to excellent wines that can be found with relative ease.

Based on 17 past trips to Spain and 2 visits in April of 2017, Michael Franz will highlight a broad range of exceptional wines in diverse styles from across Spain’s preeminent growing regions.  The dozen wines showcased in this class will help illustrate Spain’s unique status among winegrowing nations as premier protector of traditional wines (such as Sherry and Rioja Gran Reserva) but also innovative dynamo (with hundreds of young winemakers and amazing “new” varieties such as Godello and Mencia). In terms of sheer quality, Spain competes at the highest global level, and in terms of value, only South Africa is in Spain’s league.
