World Series Showdown: Napa vs. Bordeaux with Michael Franz

2 hours, $85

Cabernet-based blends and varietal bottlings of Cabernet Sauvignon from California’s Napa Valley are members of an extremely exclusive club: renditions of noble grapes that arguably surpass their Old World forbearers. Malbec from Argentina and Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand may be the only other examples of this rare club, but they don’t confront the challenge of facing off against Bordeaux—the world’s biggest and most famous wine region. This blind tasting will include at least five pairs of wines from the two regions that are directly comparable in expense and maturity. The objective is partly to pick a winner, but mostly to heighten appreciation of these great wines but contrasting them directly.

Great Reds from France’s Northern Rhône Valley with Michael Franz

2 hours, $85

The Northern Rhône Valley makes the world’s finest, most intricate and best balanced renditions of Syrah from five distinct appellations. They can range from bright, fresh styles that seem almost Burgundian in their elegance to rich, robust wines that can improve for decades and stand up even to Australian Shiraz for sheer intensity and power. Drawing wines from Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, Cornas, Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, we’ll explore these extremes and many styles situated between them, tasting wines that represent different vintages and stages of maturity.

Survey of Champagne’s Many Facets with Michael Franz

2 hours, $95

Everybody knows that France’s Champagne region produces the world’s greatest sparkling wines, but only a fortunate few have enjoyed the opportunity to directly compare Champagne’s different types and styles of wine in a single sitting. This tasting class will consider renditions from Grandes Marques, smaller houses, and single-side growers. We’ll also compare Blanc de Blancs wines with blended Champagnes and Rosés, and consider variations in sweetness levels, including no dosage, low dosage, Brut and Demi-Sec wines. Although 90% of Champagne’s production is non-vintage Brut, the region actually makes a wine for every palate and occasion—as we will experience.
