Virtual wine tastings can be extremely fun, memorable experiences with friends and family from the comfort of your own home. They are wonderful ways to bring you closer and make memories “together” even though you could be hundreds or thousands of miles apart. Here at Capital Wine School, we often get lots of questions about virtual wine tastings and what they entail and include, so we are going to answer a few of the more common questions we get about virtual wine tastings. Of course, if you have other questions about our virtual wine events that you don’t see in this blog post, we are always happy to answer those as well. You can contact us via email or phone any time. So let’s get started.

What Is a Virtual Wine Tasting?

A virtual wine tasting is a scheduled event where a credentialed sommelier/instructor talks about different types and flavors of wine while those on the other end of the screen sample the wines being discussed. It’s a very relaxed, fun way to learn something new while trying new wine flavors you have not tried before. You can ask questions, talk to each other, laugh, and just have a great time in the comfort of your own home with friends and family joining you virtually from anywhere in the world.

How Does a Virtual Wine Tasting Work?

There are a couple different ways a virtual wine tasting can work. You can host one yourself with close friends and family just to try different types of wine. You will want to establish which wines everyone should get ahead of time and try to get a variety that most of you have not tried before. For a more organized and planned out event, you can schedule a virtual wine tasting through a company that will set up the entire event. From the link to the wine to the instructor, everything is taken care of so you and your friend or family can be at home and just enjoy this unique experience without any hassle or work on your end.

How Much Does a Virtual Wine Tasting Cost?

This is a tough question to answer because every virtual wine tasting experience is different. This completely depends on the types of wine chosen, the amount of people, the length of time for the virtual wine event, and whether you are hosting the event yourself or through a company. It will also vary based on where you live and the pricing in the area. Some wine event companies charge $40-$120 a person while others start at $150 because of the location, the cost of the wine, and the service provided. It’s best to reach out to a couple vineyards and wine schools near you to get pricing from each for your specific event.

What Do You Do at a Virtual Wine Tasting?

This was briefly answered above, but we will go into a little more detail here. Now keep in mind this does depend on the company you choose, so not every wine school or vineyard will host the same type of event or cover the same topics. For most virtual wine tastings, you can choose a theme or region where wines are from that you can learn about or just a variety you’ve never tried before. At a scheduled time, an instructor or sommelier will join you virtually to go through each wine you’ve chosen and talk about where it’s from, what it’s best paired with, the history of the wine/vineyard (if there is one), and so much more. It is a wonderful way to learn something new while relaxing with different types of wine to try and learning how to enjoy wine even more.

Is a Virtual Wine Tasting a Formal Event?

A virtual wine tasting can be as formal or as relaxed as you would like it to be. If you would prefer to try fine wine all dressed up at home, live it up and enjoy the night looking fancy and feeling great. If you would prefer to be in your sweatpants and a t-shirt sipping wine and feeling relaxed, that’s great too. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy a virtual wine event as long as you are having a great time. Ask as many questions as you’d like, be as comfortable as you want, and just enjoy the virtual wine tasting in your own way.

Can I Be Anywhere for a Virtual Wine Tasting?

The beauty of a virtual wine tasting is that you, your friends, and your family can be anywhere in the world and still spend an evening “together” enjoying a virtual wine event. If you are hosting it through a local company, you can choose flavors of wine and have friends and family order the same one or get local wines that are similar to try with you. If you are hosting it yourself, you can choose wines available to all of you that you can try together to talk about the flavors and which ones you liked or did not like together. No matter where you are, these wine events can bring you closer together and help you make memories you will never forget.
