This one-day, in-person course offers six hours of guided instruction and concludes with the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines examination. Register by September 21 to receive your digital study guide by email before class.

Lunch is not included. Students are welcome to bring their own or visit a nearby eatery.
What You’ll Learn
The course covers the main wine types and common grape varieties, wine service and storage, basic tasting technique, how to describe the aroma and flavor of wine, and the fundamentals of food and wine pairing.
The Exam
30 multiple-choice questions | 45 minutes. Most students pass without reading the study guide in advance — the exam draws from both class material and the guide, and the instructor does not teach directly from the guide.
Study Guide
- Register by September 21: Instructions for accessing a digital study guide will be emailed on or around September 25
- Register after September 21: Instructions for accessing a digital study guide will be emailed as soon as possible, but you may not received it in time to review the study guide before class.
- The digital study guide expires one year from the date of redemption of the access code.
Food & Wine Pairing Exercise
This hands-on exercise explores how salt, acidity, sweetness, spice, smoke, and fat interact with wine, using items such as smoked salmon, cheddar cheese, lemon, chili, salt, and shortbread. If you have allergies to any of these items, please email info@capitalwineschool.com before class.
Good to Know
- Our classrooms are on the second floor; the building does not have an elevator.
- WSET lapel pins are available upon request for students who pass. Pick up at a future Capital Wine School event, or mail within the U.S. for a $10 fee.
- Purchasing as a gift? If you register using your own email address, please email info@capitalwineschool.com afterward with the participant’s email to avoid delays with exam registration and certificate issuance.
- A minimum enrollment is required for the course to run. If the session is canceled, registered students will be notified promptly and offered the option to reschedule or receive a full refund.
- We recommend reviewing the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines specification before class.
