In this course you will learn how grape growing, winemaking, maturation, wine law and wine business influence the style, quality and price of the principal wines of the world, and you will learn how to taste and evaluate wines from around the world.

This course is for current WSET Diploma candidates only, and candidates must have completed Units D1 and D2 before attempting this course. We also strongly advise also taking Unit D4 and/or Unit D5 before attempting this course, as there are skills and concepts that will be learned in these units that will better students’ chances for success in Unit D3.


This course, which covers theory and tasting, will be taught on  Zoom on the following weekend dates:

December 9 & 10 – 9:00am – 4:00pm both days
January 6 & 7 – 9:00am – 4:00pm both days
January 27 & 28 – 9:00am – 4:00pm both days
February 17 & 18 – 9:00am – 4:00pm both days
March 9 & 10 – 9:00am – 4:00pm both days
April 27 – 9:00am – 12:30pm (mock theory exam)
April 28 – 9:00am – 12:00pm (mock tasting exam) – 1:00pm – 3:00pm (debrief)

The final exam on May 14 & 15 takes place over two days. Day #1(theory) is open-response/ essay questions given during two sessions taking 3 & ½ hours to complete. Day # 2 (tasting) consists of two 1 &1/2 hours sessions and is comprised of 12 wines tasted blind.

*Students who enroll in this course will be automatically enrolled in the May14 & 15 exams. Students who cannot attend the exams on May 14 & 15 and wish to defer must let us know by March 10; after this time the exam fee will be forfeited and any rescheduling will incur a new exam fee of $750.00.


Wine samples will be available for curbside pickup at the Capital Wine School between 12pm – 5pm on the Friday one week prior to each class weekend (so samples for the December 9/10 weekend will be available for curbside pickup on Friday, December 1). The exception is the practice exams on April 27/28; samples will be picked up at the Capital Wine School on Friday, April 26.  Candidates who are unable to come to the school to pick up their wine samples may have their materials shipped to them for an additional shipping fee – please email info@capitalwineschool.com for more information.

Theory Exam begins at 11:00am on May 14, check-in begins at 10:30am
Tasting Exam begins at 10:30am on May 15, check-in begins at 10:00am
