When South African wines returned to the world stage after the election of Nelson Mandela as President in 1994, millions of wine lovers around the world were hopeful for the reformed nation and eager to resume enjoyment of the wines, which already had a 300+ year history behind them. However, what actually resulted for many – including me – was widespread and prolonged disappointment, due to multiple factors ranging from the effects of apartheid sanctions to internal stagnation in South Africa’s industry. It took 25 years to replant, retool, and re-think how the Western Cape could actualize its fabulous potential for quality, and it took a new generation of winegrowers to accomplish a clean break with the past. Eight trips to South Africa have enabled me to witness an astonishing transformation and meet those who have led the way, and this tasting will feature a dozen exemplary wines that show the range of excellence now flowing from the world’s most beautiful wine region.

Wine samples available for pickup by appointment on Friday, November 18 between 12pm – 5pm.
