When I began studying wine intently in the 1980s, Vega Sicilia was Spain’s single most respected wine around the world, but its region of origin was virtually unknown.  Indeed, there was no such thing as an appellation (or Denominación de Origen) for Ribera del Duero until 1982, and it wasn’t until 1985 that a second wine from the area made a splash in the USA (namely, Tinto Pesquera).  Since that time, the area has rocketed to a stature arguably surpassing that of Priorat, Toro, and even Rioja.  It still lags behind Rioja in name recognition, but that’s all the more reason to take stock of how superb these wines have become—before they are priced beyond the reach of mere mortals.  I’ll spend 10 days in the region in mid-March, and look forward to showing some of my favorite examples in different styles in this tasting—while also reporting on recent developments.

Wine samples available for pickup by appointment on Friday, April 22 between 12pm – 5pm.
