The Langhe is a region within the province of Piedmont that produces a richer abundance of great food and wine than any location of comparable size in the world.  Home to both Barolo and Barbaresco, it offers red wines at the very highest global level, but also delivers superb white and sparkling wines as well as a range of delicious, food-friendly reds from excellent varieties such as Barbera and Dolcetto as well as Nebbiolo.  With 45 Michelin-starred restaurants in the broader orbit of the beautiful town of Alba, this is an area that could easily rest on its laurels, both vinous and culinary.  And yet, the Langhe is thrillingly dynamic and innovative, with one of the world’s best wine schools sending fresh talent into the region each year.  Some of this talent flows into established DOCG appellations like Barolo and Roero, but the broadly inclusive Langhe DOC enables experimentation with a range of other varieties and styles resulting in new marvels on a monthly pace.  Some are so impressive that they’ve rocketed to DOCG status (like Nizza for Barbera) whereas others are already so good they’re causing sleepless nights for vintners in famed regions like Champagne and the Rheingau.  An exhilarating 15th trip to the region in late May inspired this blind tasting of the region’s most remarkable offerings, ranging from superb Barolo and Roero Riserva to novel wines so compelling that their future fame seems assured.

Wine samples available for pickup by appointment on Friday, July 15 between 12pm – 5pm.
