The Syrah-based reds of France’s Northern Rhône Valley are among the world’s greatest wines, based on their complexity, versatility with food, and sheer deliciousness.  My esteem for these wines is shared by almost every wine expert I know, but one virtue that is rarely discussed is their remarkably long stretch of enjoy-ability.  Most examples are marvelously appealing immediately upon release, as well as in “mid-life,” and remain wonderful in different ways for many additional years.  This is true not only of moderately priced releases from, say, Crozes-Hermitage, but also from the exalted appellations of Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage.  Tasting a dozen examples in a single tasting offers an optimal opportunity to build familiarity with these relatively rare wines while also experiencing them at different stages of maturity.  I happen to have many excellent examples in my cellar—and am strongly motivated to dig in deeply to prove the point.
