- Time: 6:30pm – 9:30pm ET
- Exam: Wednesday, February 18, 2026 6:00–7:30pm (in-person at Capital Wine School)
Course Content
This unit focuses on:
- Vine requirements
- Anatomy of the vine and grape
- Grape growing options, explaining and evaluating the different approaches and how these options affect grape yields, quality and the final wine produced
- Natural factors in the vineyard and how they influence the vine’s ability to produce grapes for wines of different styles, quality levels and price
- Winemaking and post-fermentation options and how they influence the style, quality and price of wines
Important:
- Unit D1 must be taken before attempting any other Diploma course.
- This course provides the foundation for Units D2 – D6.
- In addition to the guided learning hours/classroom time offered in this course, the WSET recommends a minimum of 80 hours of private study time for this unit
- Zoom invitations are usually emailed the day before or the morning of the first class session.
Eligibility
- You must have passed the WSET Level 3 exam before registering for the Diploma program.
- Students must provide their WSET candidate number when registering. Candidate numbers are listed on the letter of achievement received with your Level 3 certificate (not on the certificate itself). If you earned your Level 3 with another APP, please contact them for this number.
Wine Samples
- Pickup Date: Tuesday, January 6, 2026, from 12:00pm – 5:00pm (curbside, by appointment). This date will not appear on your registration confirmation, so please make note. We cannot accommodate requests for early pickup.

Shipping Option: Available for an additional fee. Requests must be made at least 7 days before the first class by emailing info@capitalwineschool.com. Samples will ship to arrive on or around the first class date. Early arrival or guaranteed delivery dates are not available.
Class Recordings
- The Capital Wine School makes every effort to record each class and provide access for up to one week after the scheduled session.
- Occasionally, technical issues may prevent recording. Refunds or concessions are not available in these cases.
- Students are strongly encouraged to attend live whenever possible.
Exam Rescheduling
- Students unable to attend the scheduled exam may request to defer to another date.
- Please review the WSET Exams Rescheduling Deadlines & Fees document.
- Students will also receive an email reminder about one week before the rescheduling deadline.
