This 4-day course will be taught by a Capital Wine School instructor via Cisco WebEx or Zoom July 9 – 12, 2020.  Class will meet each day from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

The exam will be offered on the following dates and times as students register for the course. You will receive an email from the Capital Wine School asking you to choose your prefered exam date/time. Exam slots are extremely limited and we may not be able to accommodate students’ first choice. Students who register on or after June 18 will not be eligible to sit for the July exam dates and will be automatically enrolled in the August 22 exam:

July 14: 9:00am – 11:30am (this exam date/time is no longer open to new registrants)
July 14: 6:30pm – 9:00pm (this exam date/time is no longer open to new registrants)
July 15: 9:00am – 11:30am (this exam date/time is no longer open to new registrants
July 15: 6:30pm – 9:00pm (this exam date/time is no longer open to new registrants)
July 16: 6:30pm – 9:00pm (this exam date/time is no longer open to new registrants)
July 18: 9:00am – 11:30am (this exam date/time is no longer open to new registrants)
August 22: 10:00am – 12:30pm (Due to Covid-19 physical distancing requirements, we can only accommodate 8 students per exam date/time. The August 22 exam will be available to those students who register first, and we may need to ask students who register later to attend a different exam date/time TBD).

Important: Due to WSET exam order deadlines, students who wish to reschedule an in-person paper-based exam must notifiy us at least 17 business days before the exam date, and students who wish to reschedule an online/remote exam must notify us at least 9 business days before the exam date, in order to avoid paying a new exam fee. Requests for rescheduling after these times will incur new exam fees as follows: Level 1 – $75 / Level 2 – $125 / Level 3 – $195 

Study materials will be sent via USPS Priority mail approximately 2 weeks before the first class. Wine samples will be available for curbside pickup by appointment on July 8 between 12pm – 5pm. Students who register for this course after June 24 may pick up their study materials and wine samples together on July 8, or may contact us to arrange a special pickup for their study materials (wine samples will not be available for pickup until July 8). 


The aim of the course is to provide detailed analysis of the principal wines and spirits of the world. Students will also benefit from in-depth tastings where they will learn to identify product style and quality. Emphasis is given to tasting assessment skills. Course content includes the following:

Unit 1 – Wines of the World

  • Production of Wine (location, viticulture, vinification, maturation, and bottling)
  • France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Central and South Eastern Europe, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, North America, South and Central America
  • Still Wines
  • Sparkling Wines
  • Fortified (Liqueur) Wines
  • This unit is evaluated by a multiple-choice paper of 50 questions and a question paper requiring short written answers.

Unit 2 – Tasting and Evaluating Wines of the World

  • How to taste wines and evaluate the quality, style and price.
  • Students will learn to write tasting notes by tasting and assessing 8-10 wines during each class.
  • This unit is assessed by a blind tasting paper of two wines.

The exam consists of a multiple-choice paper of 50 questions, a question paper requiring short written answers, and full written tasting notes on two wines. Those who pass the exam receive the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines, an internationally recognized credential in the wine industry.

The course fee includes the classes at Capital Wine School, the WSET Level 3 study guide, and the exam at Capital Wine School.

Note: This qualification is open to students who hold the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines & Spirits or can demonstrate the equivalent level of knowledge.  It is recommended that students complete the Level 2 Award in Wines & Spirits before progressing to the Level 3 Award. This qualification is a prerequisite for candidates planning to study for the WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines and Spirits qualification.   A student must pass the WSET Level 3 exam before registering for the Diploma program.

32.5 Guided Learning Hours (including the 2.5 hour examination) and 51.5 hours private study.
