German wine labels are often thought of as being overly complicated, but they are actually the
most fact filled, precise labels in the world (If you know what all these terms mean).
In this class we will decode the layers of German wine law. We will examine the different tiers
of Germany’s quality pyramid, with emphasis on Qualitätswein (formerly Qualitätswein
bestimmter Anbaugebiete) and Prädikatswein (formerly Qualitätswein mit Prädikat) the two
most important tiers of German “quality” wine. You will learn what the differences are
between Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein.
We will tour Germany’s 13 anbaugebiete, as well as the most important Gemeinden and
Einzellagen (vineyards). You will learn the difference between Grosses Gewächs, Grosse
Lage, Ortswein, Gutswein, Erste Lage. We discuss Sekt, a German Saprkling wine. We will
examine producers that are part of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter, or VDP, and
why these are some of the best wines produced in Germany.
