No wine-producing nation in the world has raised its quality as rapidly since the turn of the millennium as South Africa.  The country’s industry has been thoroughly transformed in two key phases since the wines returned to the USA market when Nelson Mandella became President in 1994.  The first entailed a decade-long infusion of technology and expertise that had been withheld during the era of anti-apartheid sanctions, followed by a second phase driven by shifts to better vine material planted in cooler locations.  A generational turnover among winemakers was then the catalyst for completing a full-blown quality revolution, with the best wines now showing flawless technical profiles even as they display stylistic flair, regional distinctiveness and varietal typicity.  Many American wine lovers have never been able to taste the top wines, either because of high demand or rarity due to small production by young winemakers in boutique wineries.  The dozen wines in this tasting class will be split roughly between examples that are reasonably available in the USA and bottles that I’ve smuggled back from my seven trips to South Africa.

Wine samples available for pickup by appointment on Friday, November 6 between 12pm – 5pm.

**Important: If you are registering for more than one person, please be sure to include the other participants’ email address(es) when registering if they will be viewing the class from a different location/device.
