Could a region actually suffer from being home to a pair of superb wine appellations?  The answer is yes, in the sense that Piedmont’s other superb wines are continuously and thoroughly eclipsed by the brilliance of Barolo and Barbaresco.  Fantastic wines like Barbera from the appellation of Nizza and the Arneis- and Nebbiolo-based gems from Roero struggle even to gain distribution in the USA—much less appropriate consumer appreciation.  Similarly, many ardent wine lovers here haven’t even tasted bottles from Alto Piemonte, where Nebbiolo shines but is known locally as Spanna and is augmented by the obscure but intriguing varieties of Vespolina and Croatina.  This class will include 3 or 4 exceptional Barbaresco and Barolo wines interspersed among the other contenders, and we’ll taste all of them “blind” at the outset to assure that the upstarts get a fair shake alongside the more eminent wines.

Wine samples available for pickup by appointment on Friday, June 25 between 12pm – 5pm.
