In terms of reputation and sheer quantity of production, California is King when it comes to American wine.  However, Oregon is arguably stronger in terms of quality when it comes to very important cool-climate varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, thanks to its generally cooler climate and less intense sunshine.  Similarly, Washington is now turning out renditions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Red Blends and Rieslings that can match or surpass the very best that California has to offer.  We’ll taste a dozen comparable wines blind in head-to-head pairings to assess relative quality as well as stylistic profiles from the USA’s three leading states.
