Certified Sherry Wine Specialist

Program consists of a 2.5-hour class that includes the following:

– Instruction on the history, geography, climate, viticulture, wine making, and wine styles.  When studying the styles of sherry, students will learn about their differences, pairings, and best ways to serve.
– A tasting of all the basic styles (Finos, Amontillados, Olorosos, and Sweets, 6 wines)
– A test (28 questions) graded after course to award the Certified Sherry Wine Specialist recognition to those with a passing score of 20.

ON-LINE WSET Level 2 Certification Course for SommCon Attendees

5 class on-line series plus exam, $475


REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS SATURDAY, MAY 26. THERE ARE NO REFUNDS OR RESCHEDULING AFTER THAT DATE.

Students should have basic computer literacy, internet navigation skills, and a good level of English.

The course begins Saturday, June 9 and runs for five weeks. It is based around a 5-week structured online program with a recommendation of 6 hours study per week to cover the online activities and read the relevant chapters in the textbook. Regular access and participation in the course online activities is essential for this mode of study.

The course follows a weekly structure, but it allows the student to work ahead or catch up on the activities and forums. There are no set times to log into the course as there are no live chats or webinars. The Capital Wine School will mail students the current WSET study materials for this course.

The examination will be held on Sunday, July 22 from 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. (The exam must be taken in person at SommCon.)

This on-line course will require access to a computer (recommended) and/or HTML5 compatible mobile or tablet with the following minimum requirements: Internet Explorer 10, Firefox 25.0, Safari 6, Chrome 30.0 or other HTML5 compatible; web browser with Javascript and cookies** enabled; Adobe Reader XI or equivalent; Internet access (broadband recommended) 

Week I: Study the factors influencing the style, quality and price of wine in the vineyard and winery. Discover how to decode and understand labels. Learn to taste and describe wines using the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting.

Week II: Learn about the characteristics and the styles of wines produced from the main white grape varieties and the regions producing them. Key white grape varieties: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling. Other White Grape Varieties: Albariño, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Grigio/Gris, Semillon, Torrontés, Trebbiano, Verdicchio, Viognier. Other White Wines: Muscadet, Soave, Gavi.

Week III: Learn about the characteristics and the styles of wines produced from the main black grape varieties and the regions producing them. Key black grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Shiraz. Other black grape varieties: Aglianico, Barbera, Carmenère, Gamay, Malbec, Montepulciano, Nebbiolo, Pinotage, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Zinfandel/ Primitivo. Other red wines: Douro, Valpolicella.

Week IV: Learn about the various methods for making Sparkling, Sweet and Fortified Wine, the resulting wine styles and the regions producing them. Discover the key considerations when pairing food and wine successfully.
